Some Interesting Facts about West Virginia's Forests:1

West Virginia has over 7 million more acres of forested land now than it did in 1910.

West Virginia currently has 11.9 million acres of forestland

West Virginia's forests had 18 billion board feet of sawtimber in 1949. As of the last Statewide inventory (1995), sawtimber volume had increased to 76 billion board feet.

West Virginia ranks third in the nation, behind only Maine and New Hampshire, in the percentage of land that is forested.

The big difference between West Virginia and the other two states is that 94% of our forests consist of high value hardwood species (i.e. cherry, maples, oaks, yellow poplar, walnut, etc.) where Maine and New Hampshire's forests are primarily coniferous.
