FOREST CONNECT

A wide variety of FREE forestry information is available through the ForestConnect website hosted by Cornell University Extension.  Landowners can find a number of informative publications (in PDF format) to download here.  Just a few of the topics covered by these publications include;

The ForestConnect 2007 Forestry Internet Seminar Series is also available through this website.  It uses web conferencing technology to provide research-based and unbiased information to forest owners and others interested in private forest lands management. Broadcasts occur on the third Wednesday of each month, once at noon and a repeat live broadcast at 7:00 PM, Eastern time. Each broadcast is scheduled to run an hour, although questions and answers may take additional time. The noon broadcast is saved and may be viewed at this site using the links found on the Web Conferencing & Internet Seminars page of the ForestConnect website.

 

There is no charge for participation, but registration is required. Email communication with URL details is only sent to people who have registered. New registered participants will be notified daily the week of a broadcast, with the final announcement sent at 11:00 AM the day of the broadcast. Using Diagnostic Plants to Evaluate Site Class.  Dr, Kenneth L. Carvell and Arlyn W. Perkey (1997).  28 Pages.  Spiral Bound.  USDA Forest Service, Northeast Area State & Private Forestry, Publication Number NA-TP-03-97.  This is a field guide and aid in assessing and classifying a forested sites quality and productivity potential by utilizing the presence (or absence) of individual or groups of certain diagnostic understory plants. This book relates certain indicator plants with the corresponding site potential.

Pamphlets and Other Publications

Common Myths About Appalachian Forests.  Public Lands & Timber Committees of the West Virginia Forestry Association (2005).  List Price $1.50.  This booklet was produced to examine logically and scientifically and report on some of the most common myths about the forests of Appalachia.  Ten of these were included.   Each was extensively researched and the findings were reported in great detail.  This is a very good publication for anyone wanting to learn more about the early forests of West Virginia and how their progression has lead us to where we are today.
